Got to the hotel about 6 PM yesterday, had something to eat and hit the street with my camera. Just to the west of city hall is a big municipal services building with an odd sculpture plaza. It contains bingo tokens, chess and Parcheesi pieces as well as dominoes. A plaque nearby says the title is "Your Move." At the sidewalk entrance to the plaza is a statue of the famous - or infamous - Frank Rizzo, mayor of Philadelphia during the 70s. Rizzo is remembered for saying “The streets are safe in Philadelphia, it's only the people who make them unsafe.”
The price of a glass of wine in the hotel is exorbitant so I stopped in a store to buy a bottle for the room. The cashier asked what I was doing with the big camera around my neck so I explained. After I said something about St. Louis he remarked in a bitter way that "Philadelphia is a mean and beastly place." I asked him what he meant. He replied that "it's hard to make a buck here," that the taxes and city fees were high and the opportunities limited. Okay. I've enjoyed visiting this city in the past. Maybe I should look more carefully.
So welcome to the so-called City Of Brotherly Love. That's a lot of hooey. Philadelphia sports fans are renowned for booing the other team, as well as their own players if they don't meet expectations. On the way in from the airport I saw a billboard that said "Boo Anyone You Want To." The sign was apparently promoting part of the U. S. Constitution.
These faeries, however, have a bit of spunk. Maybe they are the faeries' friends and not card-carrying members themselves. They make you think of a Tolkien novel or the supernumaries in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I'll catch up with them again out at the Faire.

Art St. Louis had a dine with the artists event in connection with its current show, Food Glorious Food. Why, you could have supped with me, since I've got a couple of pix in the show. The surprise question of the night was "Will you marry me?" She said yes.

<p><img alt="" class="rightside" src="http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4089/5053818329_5d16abb2d6_m.jpg" style="width: 201px; height: 240px;" />What a surprise: Missouri <strong>Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-04)</strong> is a total hypocrite when it comes to federal spending.</p> <p>In 2011, Hartzler was the biggest spender of Missouri's congressional delegation when it came to taxpayer funded mail and communications. In total, Missouri's Fourth District Congresswoman spend $276,453.17; over a quarter of a million dollars. That's over $86,000 more than the second highest spender, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer. Of that, Hartzler spend over $111,000 in the last quarter of 2011 alone.</p> <p>The natural next question is where this puts Hartzler in terms of all congresscritters. Ninth. Out of 435 Members of Congress, Vicky Hartzler is ninth.</p> <p>So all that hot air about being a fiscal conservative and a good steward of our taxpayer dollars? Baloney.</p> <p>So stay tuned for the report to be released next week by the US House on Member spending for the first quarter of 2012. It'll be interesting to see precisely how much Hartzler spent to let her constituents know that she's really not spending too much of their hard earned taxpayer dollars.</p> <p>Ironically, Hartzler is on record championing the need to tighten belts and cut spending in Washington, DC in order to balance the budget. <a href="http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/299001-4">As a former home economics teacher, she claimed to have unique insight into how to make tough decisions.</a></p> <blockquote><p> To balance the budget, you know, I used to teach home economics and I’d teach personal family finance to my high school students. And there’s two ways that I used that we used to talk about that you could balance a budget. You either increase your revenue, or decrease your spending. And that’s what we need to apply here in Washington, DC, as far as I see. <strong>I’m fresh eyes here, been here three months, but we are spending money we don’t have. Forty-two cents out of every dollar the government spends is borrowed. That’s irresponsible.</strong> I mean, we don’t do this in our homes. We wouldn’t do it at our work, at our businesses, so why is it ok in Washington? We’ve got to decrease the spending and spending money we don’t have.</p></blockquote> <p>Over a quarter of a million dollars on mailers in one year alone, the ninth out of 435. Zach Wyatt (R-Adair)</strong> stood up to the hate and bigotry shown by some colleagues in the Missouri legislature and called for the withdrawal of HB 2051, the "Don't Say Gay" bill sponsored by 20 bigoted members of the republican party. Joined by <strong>Rep. Stacey Newman</strong> and others, Wyatt called on <strong>Speaker Steve Tilley, Majority Leader Tim Jones</strong>, HB2051 Sponsor <strong>Steve Cookson</strong> and the other 17 cosponsors of the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” legislation to withdraw their support from the bill and commit to not introducing similar language in future legislative sessions.</p> <p>In the process of speaking against HB 2051, Rep. Wyatt also came out. <p><img alt="" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7110/7132812639_3e638c2468_z.jpg" style="border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; width: 500px; height: 331px; " /></p> <p>Just off the Plaza in Kansas City this morning, around 35 folks attended the annual shareholder meeting of Great Plains Energy, the parent company of Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L). We attended as (real) shareholders to deliver a simple message: <a href="http://www.payupkcpl.com/">While KCP&L executives hit the 99 Percent with rate hikes and give themselves raises, they need to pay their fair share of taxes</a>. During the meeting, upset shareholders delivered a tax bill to Great Plains for $368M that the rest of us will have to make up to fund our public systems and structures.</p> <p><img alt="Overdue tax bills for KCP&L " height="315" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8147/7133402843_085618e394.jpg" width="500" /></p> <p>The facts are these:</p> <ul> <li> <a href="http://payupkcpl.com/resources/"><strong>Great Plains Energy made $517 million in profit and paid zero US Federal income taxes from 2008-2010</strong></a>. Meanwhile, Great Plains executives – and their lobbyists – raked in millions.</li> <li> Great Plains Energy not only paid zero in US federal income taxes, but also <a href="http://payupkcpl.com/resources/">received a $39.5 million refund</a>, a negative 5% tax rate, over 3 years.</li> <li> In 2009 and 2010, Great Plains also <a href="http://payupkcpl.com/resources/">avoided all state income taxes and received refunds totaling more than $5 million</a>.</li> <li> Meanwhile, <a href="http://payupkcpl.com/resources/">Great Plains executives raked in $31.5 million from 2008 to 2010</a>. Great Plains CEO Michael Chesser collected $11.9 million.</li> </ul> <p>The most powerful moment of the whole morning (for me) actually came <em>after</em> the organized shareholders were escorted from the room. As the last shouting shareholder left, a man who identified himself as a Great Plains/KCP&L shareholder since "age five” complained about the disruption of the meeting, but then took outgoing CEO Michael Chesser and incoming CEO Terry Bassham to task for their exorbitant, ever-growing compensation packages while shareholders saw smaller dividends and consumers saw higher rates.
