Our distinctive porcupinefish received some equally distinctive name submissions in last month’s online contest. Thanks to everyone who participated. After reviewing the list, aquarium staff have chosen a winner: Pokey! It’s a fitting name for this spiny specimen. When threatened, a porcupinefish will quickly gulp down water to puff up to twice or three times its normal size. This makes the spines covering its body stick straight out, warning potential predators to beware.

Native to the rivers of West and Central Africa, the Peters’ elephantnose fish uses its sensitive “trunk” to navigate the waters during nighttime hunts. These fish emit small electrical charges to search the seafloor for tasty larvae, worms, and insects, and to find mates.
Lined and pot-bellied seahorses float among coral reefs and seagrass beds, anchoring their tails to the plants. Notice how their eyes move separately, helping them to watch out for both food and predators.
With their ornate fins and bright colors, sargassum and scorpion fishes stand out here at our Explore the Shore exhibit, but blend right in with the plants and corals of their ocean homes.
